~ Alex Carr-Frederick ~
In Minnesota, Alex worked for a local TV station as a production assistant on an obscure little show called Mystery Science Theater 3000. That little venture parlayed itself into an 11-year career in film and television production management and a one-way ticket to Los Angeles.
She and husband Michael spent 9 frenetic years in LA, even the family dog had a full schedule. After 5 years of 16 hour days and 7 day work weeks, Alex changed course into animal welfare, working 4 years with the nationally acclaimed SPCA LA. She worked her way up and over into a law enforcement position and spent 3 very satisfying, yet emotionally draining years as a Humane Officer. "Naively, I thought the career change would be a balm for my soul. In actuality, I found myself even more exhausted, physically and mentally, than I'd ever been working on set. In my eyes, the punishment rarely fit the crime and Mike and I decided it was time to move on-literally."
One anniversary trip to Bend, it dawned on them that Oregon was rather beautiful... And the folks were friendly... and the air was clean! So they set out to find the prettiest, friendliest place in Oregon- and they did!
After springing one more dog from the pound, Mike and Alex left LA behind and are enjoying the fantastic wilderness, their distinctly amateur garden and the cozy sense of community they've found here in Brookings.

Alex still keeps her hand in the animal world as a Disaster Response Volunteer with the SPCA LA. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Alex flew to Jackson, MS then drove to New Orleans to help with the animal rescue effort. "They were the best and worst 13 days of my life. When I asked to go, Jeanette (McVay) didn't bat an eye, just shoo'ed me out the door. In fact, everyone at Blue Pacific was phenomenally supportive."
Ever since that trip to New Orleans, Alex and her husband look at vacation time a little differently. We decided the whole idea of giving back while enjoying a vacation really appealed to us. They have since joined Earthwatch and have spent two vacations in the San Juan Islands helping the Whale Research Center in Snug Harbor, WA perform their annual survey of the resident Orca population. That by far has been the most awe inspiring thing I have ever been a part of. One year, Mikes baby sister had a debilitating car accident and needed outside help taking care of her three small children. Instead of sending money to help defray daycare and maid service costs, we offered to fly back to MN and do the work ourselves. His sister and brother-in-law were thrilled with the idea, so not only did we get a chance to bond with our niece and nephews, we learned that raising children was just as labor intensive as we had suspected, and we are even more satisfied with our decision to stick to raising shelter dogs.
